Research published by Lareef Zubair over the last 15 years has been in the areas of bio-physical environment, societal influences of the environment, and societal responses. The biophysical work includes climate (modeling, diagnostics, predictions), climate impacts, hydrology (diagnostics, modeling), environment. He has conducted research on climate impacts on agriculture, water resources, drought, floods, public health, and river basin management broadly. He has ongoing programs on coastal and fisheries impacts of climate.
He also works on environmental education particularly at higher education institutions. He has undertaken most of his work in Sri Lanka but has ongoing work in Maldives, Comoros and Botswana as well. He has been a reviewer for a dozen journals and been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Energy Engineering where he oversaw publications related to climate and environment.
